PricewaterhouseCoopers has added its name to the growing number of players creating “apps” to help employers understand and use private health insurance exchanges.

PWC is partnering with one national and three regional business groups to provide the tools companies will need to navigate the private exchanges. The nonprofit research and information organization is dubbed The Private Exchange Evaluation Collaborative. Joining PWC in the creation of the collaborative: Employers Health Coalition, the Midwest Business Group on Health, the Northeast Business Group on Health and the Pacific Business Group on Health.

The collaborative will serve as a guide for understanding how the private exchanges work. Among the resources: technology and business process capabilities, financial models, products, administrative requirements and employee support services, the group said in a statement.

By collaborating with the employer groups, PWC is combining its knowledge of private exchanges with four groups that have already demonstrated a desire to participate at some level in the exchanges. The health coalitions have been using their clout to push for a center of health care excellence, standard cost measures for various medical procedures, and reduced health insurance rates for their members.

Now, these groups, backed by PWC, intend to help employers learn more about private exchanges in order to find the most appropriate health coverage for their particular business. There are currently more than 100 private exchanges offering various types of coverage and, with new ones constantly emerging, the employer groups are moving to fill the information gap around this explosive field.
