Somewhere in the middle of Africa

Four years ago I was invited by my very close friend, who also happens to be my legal adviser, Richard to join him together with his brother, his son and a South African bow hunter for the trip of a lifetime to Botswana.

The plan was to fly from Sydney to Johannesburg and pick up a rental four-wheel drive Land Rover with all the camping gear supplied. Richard’s son also had a four-wheel drive.

So we took off from Johannesburg airport and crossed South Africa to the Botswana border to drive up through the Kalahari desert to Maun, a major Botswana city on the edge of the Okavango delta. The Okavango delta is the largest swamp in the world and geographically in the middle of Africa.

We then entered the Mauremi reserve, one of the last places in Africa where there are no fences and you can drive where you want and camp where you want. Our plan was to get up close and personal with the wildlife.

I had bought a new SLR digital camera so I was very keen to try to outdo the wildlife photographers. One evening we were parked at a waterhole a long way from where we were camped. I wanted to stay and take some shots of the sunset and the animals that came down to the water hole, so the rest of my friends drove off in one of the Land Rovers leaving me to my endeavors.

After about three hours it started to get dark. It was then that I realized I was somewhere in the middle of Africa and no one knew where I was. More importantly, I didn’t know where I was. I was so preoccupied about getting that perfect shot that it didn’t occur to me that I would not be able to find my way back to where we were camping over 40 kilometers away, somewhere in the swamp.

I had no GPS or compass, flashlight or map. You see, I had believed that I could find my way to my destination, though I had no idea where I was or what direction I should follow.

My purpose in sharing this true story with you is that many of us have a goal to reach, but you have no way of getting there if you don’t really know where you are right now.

Take some time out and explore the opportunity to work with a mentor or coach to put you on the right track to achieving your goal.
