Recruiting and retention as a tool to improve workforce diversity is priority for most HR managers but there seems to be plenty of room to do more.

A survey by the Society for Human Resource Management found that just 38 percent of respondents believe their retention strategies were put in place to foster a consistently diverse workforce. Slightly more than half (57 percent) say their recruiting system is intended to increase workplace diversity.

When asked whether diversity was a goal included in the company vision statement, 27 percent answered “yes.” Just 15 percent regularly meet with resource groups that help foster workplace diversity, and only 14 percent say they are “reviewing and signing off on diversity metrics and progress.”

Other findings:

64 percent “reported having a formal (written) or informal policy that addresses sexual orientation discrimination in the workplace.”

24 percent “reported having a formal (written) or informal policy that addresses gender identity and/or gender expression.”

Responses came from 292 U.S.-based HR managers.
