No one likes to think about it, but according to the 2001 Commissions Standard Ordinary Table of Mortality, a 30-year-old male has a one out of 10 chance of dying before paying off a 30-year mortgage. At the age of 35 the same male would have a one out of seven chance of dying before paying off a 30-year mortgage. At the age of 40 he would have a one out of four chance of dying before paying off that mortgage. At age 45 he would have a one out of three chance of dying before paying off that mortgage and at age 50 he would have a one out of two chance of dying before paying off the mortgage.

These statistics are sobering and certainly gives one something to think about.
