The worst piece of advice I ever received in my career was this, “Patrick, the key to success in this business is simply getting in front of a lot of people.”

I want to be the first to tell you that nothing could be further from the truth. I spent many long and tiring years working hard to get in front of a lot of people and what I discovered was that getting in front of a lot of people simply guaranteed I’d work a lot of hours. It did not assure my success. You see busyness does not equal success. I’ve seen many “busy” professionals unable to feed their families.

So if getting in front of a lot of people is not the key to success, then what is? I’ll tell you the secret. It’s getting in front of the RIGHT people. That is the key to success. What do the right people look like? They look like individuals who are interested in your product, individuals who are a good fit for your product, and individuals who want your product.

And guess what? The good news is you don’t have to look far. The chances are these folks are already in your current client database, people you currently work with. The problem is most advisors are so “busy” chasing new customers they forget about the ones they already have. They don’t turn around long enough to see the great opportunity sitting right in front of them.
