Insurers shed nearly 7,000 jobs in June
U.S. insurers shed 6,900 jobs last month, according to the U.S. Bureau of Statistics.
Nationwide, 125,000 jobs were lost, although employment in the private sector continued to improve. Overall, the nation's unemployment rate fell to 9.5 percent.
Within the industry, both the health insurance and reinsurance sectors added jobs between May and June. The health sector added 1,100 jobs since May 2009, climbing to 436,000.
Meanwhile, reinsures added 200 jobs to a total of 25,600, though overall, the category has dropped 7.6 percent during the past 12 months.
The life insurance sector was down 2.8 percent between 2009 and 2010 to a total of 343,200 jobs, while property and casualty jobs were down 4 percent to 462,500.
