In an effort to combat the Medicare doughnut hole -- or the gap in Part D prescription coverage -- the Department of Health and Human Services will this week mail $250 checks to approximately 80,000 beneficiaries.

The Department estimates that about 4 million seniors will get these checks throughout 2010 -- an effort which represents one of the first movements since the health reform law was passed.

And finally, these checks are now slated to be sent out June 10 -- three weeks earlier than anticipated.
