Increase communication between Medicare and Medicaid officials would improve the efficiency of
fraud detection programs, according to a new report by the National Association of Medicaid directors.
The roles of contractors for the two programs —
Medicare recovery audit contractors (RACs) and Medicaid integrity contractors (MICs) — often overlap, leading to duplication of services, the report said.
Duplications also occur in the Payment Error Rate Management Measurement (PERM) program and the Medicare-Medicaid Data Match Program, according to the report.
The report recommends the creation of a taskforce to help increase efficiency between Medicare and the Department of Health and Human Services Office of the Inspector General. The proposed body would be housed in the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services’ Medicare-Medicaid Coordination Office.
