The number of Americans filing for unemployment benefits climbed to 500,000 last week -- its highest level in nine months, the Department of Labor reports.

This rise, which marks the third consecutive week unemployment benefits experienced an increase, is compared with 488,000 claims filed the week previous.

Finally, the number of initial claims filed last week is significant considering that figures have been hovering in the mid- to upper-400,000s since November.
