Consumer prices rise slightly in January
Consumer prices rose less than expected in January, while prices excluding food and energy declined for the first time in nearly 20 years, according to the Labor Department.
The seasonally adjusted Consumer Price index rose 0.2 percent last month, following an identical 0.2 percent rise in December.
Consumer energy costs jumped 2.8 percent last month after a rise of 0.8 percent in December, while food prices rose 0.2 percent following a 0.1 percent rise the month before.
Excluding energy and food prices, the core measure of consumer inflation fell 0.1 percent in January, the first decline since December 1982.
