Jobless claims fall, production up slightly
New weekly jobless benefits fell to their lowest level in almost two years, while industrial production saw a small gain in June, according to government reports.

Initial claims for state unemployment benefits fell 29,000 to a seasonally adjusted 429,000 last week, according to the U.S. Labor Department.

According to one Labor Department official, layoffs that normally arise during this time of the year seem not to have occurred so far.

Meanwhile, last week, the four-week moving average of new jobless claims fell 11,750 to 455,250.

In addition, U.S. industrial production experienced a small gain in June, as hot weather drove up utility demands, according to a report by the Federal Reserve.

Industrial output rose 0.1 percent, beating economists' predictions but well below the 1.3 percent advance seen in May.
