U.S. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid is expected to unveil an energy bill aimed at creating safer offshore drilling and converting trucks to run on domestic natural gas.

In an effort to encourage swift passage, measures toward climate-control and carbon caps -- as well as mandates that require utilities to generate some of their power from alternatives sources -- have been removed from the bill.

The full Senate could begin consideration of Reid's bill as early as Tuesday and Democrats would like to pass it by the early part of the following week, as the Senate's month-long recess begins Aug. 6.
