Based on data from the U.S. Census Bureau, a new report from the Employee Benefits Research Institute indicates that Social Security makes up about 40 percent of retirement income for seniors.

Twenty percent of savings come from pensions and annuities, (26 percent from earnings and wages, and 13 percent from income from assets accounts.

In terms of just women, 48 percent rely on Social Security, compared with 34 percent of men; while 22 percent of men prefer to use pensions and annuities, compared with 17 percent of women.
