More than 1,200 companies received waivers as part of the health care reform law, the Health and Human Services Department said last week.
The HHS on Friday updated the total number of waivers issued, the last time they are required to do so.
Waivers from the law’s restrictions on annual benefit caps were applied for by 1,231 companies. Companies that received waivers can keep their caps until 2014, when annual limits will be outlawed.
The waivers apply to approximately four million Americans, approximately 3 percent of the population, according to the HHS.
Republicans have criticized the waivers, saying they’re proof that the health care law is not workable, while HHS says the waivers are an example of the law's flexibility.
HHS also denied 96 waiver requests, according to the report.
