Insurers contribute to Hurricane Sandy relief effort

Aetna (NYSE: AET) is mobilizing its nationwide force of employee volunteers to offer assistance to communities in need. Aetna also is reaching out to particularly vulnerable members in affected areas to see if help is needed, and helping consumers determine which hospitals in storm-torn areas are operational.
Aetna’s specialty pharmacy team also is reaching out to members who were expecting shipments of specialty or biotech medications used to treat chronic diseases. As needed, Aetna is redirecting shipments to alternate locations where members have evacuated, authorizing replacement prescriptions at retail pharmacies or hospital outpatient pharmacies that are operational, providing advice on the stability of medications that may have been unrefrigerated for a period of time, and other special issues.
Aetna is also attempting to reach members in nurse care management programs who are homebound with special needs like those who depend on home nursing visits to make sure they are getting the care they need.
The Hartford today announced a $250,000 contribution to the American Red Cross disaster relief efforts in support of those affected by Storm Sandy.
"Hurricane Sandy's path of destruction stretches hundreds of miles and has impacted millions of people, and this will be one of the biggest Red Cross relief operations in the past five years," said Gail McGovern, president and CEO of the Red Cross.
Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Company (MassMutual) today announced it will donate $100,000 to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund in response to the devastating impacts of Hurricane Sandy.
In addition to MassMutual's $100,000 contribution to the American Red Cross, the company will also match eligible contributions in support of the relief effort from employees and financial professionals through the company's Matching Gift Program
MassMutual's disaster relief and servicing guidelines also help ensure that policyowners and clients in impacted areas have service and product options available to them when natural disasters occur. MetLife, Inc. (MET) today announced that MetLife Foundation will make a $1 million contribution toward relief and rebuilding efforts, including $500,000 to the American Red Cross and $500,000 to support long-term recovery needs. The company also announced that the Foundation will match up to $125,000 of employee contributions made to the American Red Cross.
The MetLife National Catastrophe Response Team is answering incoming calls to guide customers of MetLife Auto & Home through the claims process. MetLife’s Catastrophe Response Vehicles have also been deployed to centrally located areas to help expedite claims reporting. The online Disaster Advice Center at www.metlife.com/disasteradvice provides up-to-date information about where Catastrophe vehicles are located. Nationwide Insurance is joining forces with the American Red Cross to support the people in these communities that have endured tremendous loss. The Nationwide Insurance Foundation announced today a $300,000 donation to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund to aid the growing number of families in need.
Sandy has caused widespread devastation to entire communities throughout this region as evidenced by more than 21,000 claims that have already been made through our agents and call centers.
The American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund will help meet immediate needs of victims of the storm by providing food, shelter, emotional support, clean up kits and other assistance for families and communities as they begin to rebuild their lives. New York Life will donate $1,000,000 to aid Hurricane Sandy relief efforts, allocating $500,000 to the American Red Cross, $250,000 to the Mayor's Fund to Advance New York City and $250,000 for local recovery efforts in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut.
New York Life will also match contributions by its employees, agents and retirees to the American Red Cross or Feeding America, a network of food pantry organizations, with no limitation.
The company said its customers are eligible for crisis relief. For those who are in immediate financial need, New York Life can provide emergency loans against the cash value of a current policy to help in recovery and rebuilding. New York Life also can assist if a policyholder needs a payment extension for a short time, and if a policy has been lost or destroyed. Prudential Financial, Inc. (NYSE:PRU) is donating $3 million through The Prudential Foundation to non-profit organizations assisting in the relief and recovery efforts for victims of Hurricane Sandy. These include the Community FoodBank of New Jersey, The Salvation Army, the American Red Cross and other organizations. In addition, Prudential will match employees’ personal contributions to non-profit organizations delivering relief efforts and services in the communities affected by the hurricane.
